Relief Stitch A 3-dimensional pattern with raised stitches worked around the post as in basket weave.   You can check out my video tutorial to see how to do this pattern stitch. Multiple of 2 chain Row 1: skip (sk) 3 chain, * 1 double crochet (dc) in each chain*, chain (ch) 1, turn. Row 2: * 1 single crochet (sc) in each double crochet (dc)*, chain (ch) 2, turn. Row 3: * 1 back post half double crochet (bphdc), 1 double crochet (dc) in next single crochet*, chain (ch) 1, turn. Row 4: * 1 single crochet (sc) in top of post half double crochet, 1 single crochet (sc) between post half double crochet and the double crochet*, 1 single crochet (sc) in the turning chain, chain (ch) 2, turn. Row 5: * 1 back post half double crochet (bphdc), 1 double crochet (dc) in next single crochet*, chain (ch) 1, turn.   Repeat from Row 4.

Basket Weave Stitch An unusual dimension is created by working around the posts , first to the front, then the back.   You can check out my video tutorial to see how to do this pattern stitch. Multiple of 6 chain   Row 1: skip 3 chain, * 1 double crochet (dc) in next chain*, repeat from* to end of row, chain (ch) 2, turn. Rows 2 and 3: skip 1 double crochet (dc), *[1 front post double crochet (fpdc)] 3 times, [1 back post double crochet (bpdc)] 3 times*, [1 back post double crochet(bpdc)] 3 times, 1 double crochet (dc) in top of turning chain, chain (ch) 2, turn.   Rows 4 and 5: skip 1 double crochet (dc), *[1 front post double crochet (fpdc)] 3 times, [1 back post double crochet (bpdc)] 3 times*, {1 back post double crochet (bpdc)] 3 times, 1 double crochet (dc) in top of turning chain, chain (ch) 2, turn.   Repeat from Row 2.

Open Ridge Stitch A firm and heavy, yet airy pattern; especially suitable for a placemat or handbag.   You can check out my video tutorial to see how to do this pattern stitch. Multiple of 2 chain plus 1 Row 1: skip (sk) 1 chain (ch), * 1 single crochet (sc) in each chain*, repeat from * to end of row, chain (ch) 1, turn. Row 2: 1 half double crochet (hdc), * skip 1 stitch, 1 half double crochet  (hdc) in next stitch, 1 half double crochet (hdc) between 2 proceeding half double crochet*, skip 1 stitch, 1 half double crochet (hdc) in chain at beginning of row, chain 1, turn. Row 3: * 1 single crochet (sc), inserting hook through front loop of each stitch in previous row*, repeat from * to end of row, chain (ch) 1, turn. Repeat from Row 2.

Diagonal Stitch Long stitch pulled diagonally across each group of three.   You can check out my video tutorial to see how to do this pattern stitch. Multiple of 4 chain plus 1 Row 1: skip (sk) 1 chain, * 1 single crochet (sc) in each chain*, chain (ch) 2, turn. Row 2: * skip (sk) 1st stitch, 1 double crochet (dc) in each of next 3 stitches, insert hook in last skipped stitch, yarn over (yo), draw through an elongated loop, yarn over (yo), draw through 2 loops*, repeat from * to end of row, 1 double crochet (dc) in last stitch, chain (ch) 1, turn. Row 3: skip 1st stitch, * 1 single crochet (sc) in each stitch*, repeat to end of row, 1 single crochet (sc) in turning chain, chain (ch) 2, turn.   Repeat from Row 2.

Up And Down Stitch A varied texture produced by alternating single crochet (sc) and double crochet (dc) stitches. You can check out me video tutorial to see how to do this pattern stitch. Multiple of 2 chain plus 2 Row 1: skip (sk) 2 chain, 1 single crochet (sc) in next chain, *1 double crochet (dc), 1 single crochet (sc)*, repeat from * to end of row, 1 double crochet, chain 2, turn. Row 2: skip (sk) 1st double crochet (dc), *1 double crochet (dc) in single crochet (sc) of previous row, 1 single crochet (sc) in double crochet (dc) of previous row*, repeat from * to end of row, 1 double crochet (dc) in chain (ch) 2 of previous row, chain (ch) 2, turn. Repeat from Row 2

Double Chain Stitch A double chain stitch makes a sturdier foundation then a simple chain. It can also be used alone for a narrow trim or cord. Make a slip knot and chain (ch ) 2, work 1 single crochet (sc) in second chain from hook.   *Insert hook under the left loop of the single crochet (sc), catch yarn and draw up a loop, yarn over (yo), draw through 2 loops.*  Repeat instructions between * * until chain is the desired length.

Double Stitch Each stitch spans two.  You can check out my video tutorial to see how to do this pattern stitch. Multiple of 2 chain plus 2 Row 1: skip (sk) 2 chain (ch), 1 double stitch [Insert hook in next chain, yarn over (yo), draw through a loop, insert hook in next chain, yarn over (yo), draw through a loop, yarn over (yo), draw through 3 loops],  * 1 double stitch, inserting hook first in stitch where second yarn over (yo) was made for previous double stitch*, Repeat from * to end of row, chain (ch) 2, turn. Row 2: *1 double stitch in each pair of stitches*, Repeat from * to end of row, 1 double stitch inserting hook in last stitch and top of chain at beginning, chain 2, turn. Repeat from Row 2.

Alternate Stitch Two single crochets worked in every other stitch yield a firm fabric with leaf-like motif. You can check out my video tutorial to see how to do this pattern stitch.  Multiple of 2 chain (ch) plus 2. Row 1: skip 3 chain, 2 single crochet (sc) in next chain, *skip 1 chain, 2 single crochet (sc) in next chain*, repeat from *, chain (ch) 2, turn. Row 2: * skip 1 stitch, 2 single crochet (sc) in next stitch*, chain 2, turn. Repeat from Row 2.

Double-Faced Double Crochet Double-faced double crochet makes a sturdy, very thick fabric. You can check out my video tutorial to see how to do this technique. Multiple is any number of chains (ch). Row 1: 1 double crochet (dc) in each chain, chain 3, turn Row 2: With fabric sideways, skip first stitch, * yarn over (yo), inserts hook in back loop of next stitch and back loop of foundation chain, catch yarn, draw a loop through 2 back loops, then complete double crochet (dc)*, repeat from * to end of row, chain (ch) 3, turn. Repeat Row 2, working into back of each double crochet (dc) and double crochet (dc) of previous row.

Working Around The Post Working around the post (vertical shaft of a stitch) is a technique that creates a three-dimensional effect. The post stitches can be worked to either the front or the back, or alternately front and back, depending on the desired results. You can check out my video tutorial to see how to do this technique. To work a front post double crochet (fpdc), take yarn over (yo) hook, insert hook front to back between next 2 stitches, then bring it forward between the stitch being worked and the one after it; hook is now positioned horizontally in back of stitch. Catch yarn and complete the double crochet (dc). To work a back post double crochet (bpdc), take yarn over (yo) hook, insert hook back to front between the next two stitches, then back again between the stitches being worked and the one after it; hook is now position horizontally in front of stitch. Catch yarn and complete the double crochet (dc).

Working Between Stitches   Working between stitches is a technique used in many patterns, meshes, for example. One or more chains are made between stitches in one row; in the next row, you crochet into the chain or change space. Always know which method is specified, because results are different for each. You can check out my video tutorial to see how to do this technique. To work in a chain between stitches, insert hook under the 2 top loops; make stitch through the chain. To work in a chain space between stitches, insert hook under the chain and make a stitch or group of stitches over the chain.
